LeBron James Tops NBA Jersey Sales, Kevin Durant a Close Second

LeBron James once again has the NBA’s best-selling jersey, but Kevin Durant is as close as he has ever been to the top, finishing the regular season in second place for the first time, reports ESPN.

The rankings are based on sales during the season at NBAStore.com, figures that were released by the league on Thursday.

Despite playing in only six games this season, Kobe Bryant still finished in third in jersey sales. Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose, who played in only 10 games, finished fourth, and Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry rounded out the top five.

Thanks in part to James, who has finished with the top-selling jersey in six of his 11 seasons in the league, the Heat are the best-selling team. The Lakers, Knicks and Celtics finished second, fifth and sixth in merchandise sales, respectively, despite all missing the playoffs.

A surprise to the jersey list is San Antonio Spurs center Tim Duncan, who squeaked into the top 15 at No. 14. It’s the first time Duncan has been in the top 15 since 2007.

Magic Johnson Leads Group Buying WNBA’s LA Sparks

magic johnson

Magic Johnson will again be part of professional basketball in Los Angeles.

The former Lakers great is part of a group buying the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA, reports the Associated Press.

“We’re totally thrilled,” WNBA President Laurel Richie told The AP. “When Magic chooses to enter into a partnership with a WNBA team, that’s a great thing. He’s a legend within basketball. He’s very knowledgeable about the game. He’s a larger-than-life personality. He’s an extremely successful businessman. He cares about the community the way that the WNBA does.”

Johnson and Mark Walter teamed with a group of investors to buy baseball’s Los Angeles Dodgers in 2012 for a record $2.15 billion. It will be the same group owning the Sparks, minus Peter Guber, who owns a stake in the NBA’s Golden State Warriors.

Richie said Walter, the Dodgers’ chairman, approached the WNBA about buying the Sparks a few weeks ago. She said Walter and Johnson discussed the idea on a cross-country flight and by the time they landed on the West Coast they had decided they wanted to own the Sparks.

“He is looking forward to coming to games,” Richie said. “He is a fan already and now I think he’s going to have a heightened interest in this team all together. There will be lots of opportunity to see him and interact with him.”

CEO of Madison Media Management Paula Madison speaks onstage during the BET Revealed Seminars during the 2013 BET Experience at JW Marriott Los Angeles at L.A. LIVE on June 29, 2013 in Los Angeles

Previous Sparks owner Paula Madison informed the league in late December that she wouldn’t be able to run the team anymore. She told The AP that her family had lost $12 million, including $1.4 million last season, operating the franchise since buying it from the Buss family in 2007.

Johnson was a part owner of the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers for a decade before selling his share in 2011.

While the franchise hasn’t been successful financially, the Sparks have been one of the WNBA’s best teams on the court and have led the league in attendance the past two seasons. They won titles in 2001 and 2002 and made it to the playoffs in five of the past six seasons. They were knocked out in the opening round by Phoenix last season.

Los Angeles, one of only four original WNBA franchises left, also has one of the league’s marquee players in MVP Candace Parker.

“I do know they were very attracted to this team not just because they were in L.A. and their incredible history, but also their performance over the last few years,” Richie said. “The players, Candace being MVP, Carol (Ross) being Coach of the Year, their knowledge and experience — they recognize what an incredible franchise it is at this moment.”

La La ‘Definitely’ Thinks Hubby Carmelo Anthony will Stay With Knicks

La La Anthony finds herself all over ESPN this morning after saying she “definitely” thinks her husband, free-agent-to-be Carmelo Anthony, will re-sign with the New York Knicks this summer.

“I definitely think he will stay,” La La told host Andy Cohen Monday night. “I know that he wants to stay, and I support him wherever he wants to go.

“Listen, I used to live in Denver with him. If I can live in Denver, I can live anywhere. I just want him to be happy.”

Carmelo Anthony says he will test free agency this summer. He is under contract through 2014-15 but can opt out after this season.

Under the collective bargaining agreement, the Knicks can offer him a maximum contract of $129 million over five years. Other suitors can offer Anthony a maximum of $96 million over four years.

Meanwhile, La La playfully mocked those who speculate that she will have a heavy influence on her husband’s decision.

“I get blamed for everything. No matter what happens, it’s my fault,” she said. “[There are] all these talks if he’s staying in New York or not, [and] I’m somehow the mastermind behind if he stays or not.”

The Knicks (17-27) have been a disappointment this season, causing some to speculate that Melo will take less money and sign with another team this summer.

One potential destination is Los Angeles. The Lakers are among several teams, including the Chicago Bulls and Dallas Mavericks, that may have the requisite salary-cap space this summer to sign Anthony.

Kobe Bryant, a friend of Anthony’s, said Sunday that he will not be actively recruiting the Knicks forward to join the Lakers.

“Well, everybody wants to play in Los Angeles,” Bryant said when asked about Anthony’s potential interest in joining the Lakers. “I mean, New York is a beautiful place, don’t get me wrong, but it is colder than s— out here. You know, palm trees and beaches obviously are a little more appealing.

“All jokes aside, I think that players, when that time comes, will have to make the best decision for them and their families. I try not to think about it too much. If he wants to call me for advice later as a friend, I will be more than happy to give it to him.”

Bryant pointed out that one way for Anthony to be viewed as more than just a scorer is to win a title.

“The only way to do that is win,” Bryant said. “That’s it. I won five championships, and there’s some of you guys [who] still say that. You just got to take it and roll with it. The important thing is winning a championship. That’s the only way to shake it. That’s the only way Michael [Jordan] shook it. That’s the only way any top scorer will be able to shake it.”

Anthony, who is in his 11th season, said Monday that his sole motivation is to win an NBA title.

“That’s the only thing I care about. Anything else is irrelevant to me when it comes to basketball,” he said. “Championship is the only thing that’s on my mind, is the only thing I want to accomplish, I want to achieve, and I’m going to do what I got to do to get that. That’s my motivating factor. Nothing else even motivates me anymore, just that.”

jerry buss Los Angeles Lakers Owner Dr. Jerry Buss Passes Away

In very sad news, Los Angeles Lakers owner Dr. Jerry Buss has passed away at the age of 79.

Last week, it was reported that Buss had been hospitalized for an extended period of time due to an undisclosed form of cancer. Unfortunately, today, the longtime Lakers owner passed away due to complications from the illness.

Buss purchased the Lakers in 1979 and went on to win 10 championships with the team, 5 of them being with star player Kobe Bryant. Over this past NBA All Star Weekend, Kobe commented on Dr. Buss’ condition and what the owner meant to him:

Yeah, (Buss) has been on my mind, that’s been on my mind for a while. I’m just trying to stay, gotta stay positive.

“He means everything to me. He took a chance on a 17-year-old kid coming out of Philadelphia when nobody really saw that potential. He believed in me the entire way.”

Condolences to his family and friends.

Lamar Odom Involved in Car Crash En Route to Cousin’s Funeral

Los Angeles Lakers star Lamar Odom was involved in car accident while on his way to his cousin’s funeral in New York, according to E! News.

Odom, the husband of Khloe Kardashian, was not driving the vehicle and wasn’t hurt, a Kardashian rep told E! News of the accident. He was riding in the backseat, but his wife wasn’t in the car at the time.

Odom’s driver apparently collided with a motorcyclist, who was seriously injured along with a teenage pedestrian. They are being treated for injuries at a Queens hospital.

Odom, who joined the Lakers in 2004 after playing for the Miami Heat and Los Angeles Clippers, married his wife in 2009, with the ceremony featured on E! Entertainment’s “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.” The couple also co-starred in spinoff show Khloe & Lamar, which debuted in April.

MediaTakeOut.com first reported the news of the accident.

Khole & Lamar a Hit With Viewers

Other than the fact that his team had its season curtailed before making it to the NBA Finals for a fourth consecutive time, it’s been a pretty good year for Los Angeles Lakers star Lamar Odom. He and wife, Khole put out their own unisex fragrance.

Odom collected the NBA’s Sixth Man Award, given out annually to the best nonstarter in the league.

Odom’s clothing line, Rich Soil, is thriving in the fashion industry. And now, even more good news for the 6-foot-10 power forward. E!’s Khole & Lamar drew in 2.5 million viewers in the show’s finale, which stars the married couple.

The show, which features the baby sister of the Kardashian clan, follows Khole and her husband throughout the NBA season. In its first season, Khloe & Lamar, has ranked as the top original series in the women 18-34 demo on Sunday nights versus the cable networks.

The finale drew a 2.82 rating in the women 18-34 demographic, one of the highest ratings for the series. In the key adults 18-49 demo, Khloe & Lamar delivered a 1.61 rating (1.7 million) of the season. While big sisters Courtney and Kim take on New York with a splash, Khole and Lamar take an inside look into the married life of a high-profiled celebrity couple.

Cavaliers Beat Lakers: Avenge 55 Point Loss

The Lakers hit the All-Star break broken.

Looking nothing like two-time defending NBA champions, they dropped their third straight game, a stunning 104-99 loss Wednesday night to the Cleveland Cavaliers – the league’s worst team, which avenged a 55-point embarrassment against Los Angeles last month.

Ramon Sessions came off the bench and scored a season-high 32 points for the Cavs, who were beaten 112-57 by the Lakers on Jan. 11.

That loss was No. 11 in a league-record streak that eventually reached 26 before Cleveland ended it last week with an overtime win against L.A.’s less-heralded squad, the Clippers.

Report: Monica and NBA’s Shannon Brown Married Since November

The NBA is reportedly confirming that Los Angeles Lakers star Shannon Brown and R&B singer Monica have tied the knot.

The ceremony is said to have taken place in secret on Nov. 22 in Los Angeles, just one month following their engagement.  The couple started dating in June 2010 after Shannon played Monica’s romantic lead in the video for her song “Love All Over Me.”

The two are reportedly planning a public wedding to take place in June in Los Angeles, likely after the NBA Finals scheduled from June 2-16.

Rumors about a secret marriage began circulating after Monica went to the DMV in Georgia a while back to file for a legal name change.

Lakers Clarify Parameters for ‘Khloe and Lamar’

As previously reported, the official greenlight of E!’s “Khloe and Lamar” reality show was announced Wednesday with news that Lamar Odom would be shown as he travels with his Los Angeles Lakers team.

Apparently, that was news to the Lakers organization.

According to the Orange County Register, Lakers spokesman John Black said Wednesday the team and E! network have not fully discussed the parameters involving following Odom as the Lakers finish out this season. The reality show will only be given access to the locker rooms, practice and wherever other media is allowed, he said.

Anything else, such as meeting up with Odom on the road, is up to the player, Black said. The network will not be allowed on the team’s chartered plane.

Khloe Kardashian told E! News that she and Odom “felt blessed to have been given such an amazing opportunity. I know that it will only strengthen the bond we have and the love we share for each other and we’re so excited to share our lives with our fans,” she said.
